I. Position: Representative Payee Specialist


II. Status: Full Time, Non - Exempt


III. Reports to: ILS Program Director


IV. Position Summary: Responsible for providing financial management services to people with disabilities. Enroll individuals in payee services, process Social Security income, identify and help with other assistance applications, develop monthly budgets, provide ongoing financial planning, process payment of bills, maintain financial records, and promote financial independence.


V. Position Expected Hours of Work: There may be some variability in the weekly schedule, but, typical hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, 40 hours weekly. Hours may be adjusted to better meet consumer and program needs. Position is housed and primarily operates out the IndependenceFirst main office and provides services throughout our service area as needed. Some evenings and weekends hours may be expected.


VI. Essential Functions of the Position:


  1. Assist individuals with Social Security payee applications and forms.
  2. Update and complete Social Security forms and reports as needed.
  3. Notify Social Security of all consumer status changes.
  4. Reports wages and changes to Social Security.
  5. Assist consumer with developing and implement a budget and revise as needed.
  6. Issue checks to consumers and vendors on a weekly basis or as needed.
  7. Assure payment to creditors based on the consumer’s ability to pay.
  8. Manage the computer program to assure a daily balance of the Representative Payee Account.
  9. Manage consumer files with current and accurate information in regards to rent verifications, release of information, and other debits.
  10. Provide Social Security with annual reporting of consumer’s accounts.
  11. Promote independence by assist consumers with reaching their financial goals.
  12. Provide information on other services provided by the agency and make appropriate referrals.
  13. Receive training necessary to stay well informed on all aspects of benefits and services for persons with disabilities.
  14. Provide presentations and trainings to agencies and/or communities, as assigned.
  15. Provide agency and program required documentation.
  16. Perform all other job duties assigned.

  1. Bachelor's degree in related field or life experience may be substituted in lieu of, in full or part of academic requirements.
  2. Previous experience working with people with disabilities required.
  3. Knowledge of the service system, benefits and entitlements and supports utilized by people with disabilities required.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  5. Knowledge of disability rights legislation preferred.
  6. Good computer skills, knowledge of MS Word products, specifically, Word, EXCEL, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  7. Demonstrated positive attitude, reliability, a self-starter who assumes responsibility when warranted, is conscientious, professional in manner and hard working.
  8. Transportationally mobile or able to arrange own transportation.
  9. Must be able to work occasional weekends and evening hours.
